What is Silver Sulfadiazine?

Sulfadiazine silver, a sulfa drug, is used to prevent and treat infections by bacteria and fungi.


Silver sulfadiazine is applied to the skin and burned areas to prevent and treat fungal infections that can occur with burns. This medicine may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Other drugs are used together with this medicine for burns. Patients with very severe burns or burns in more than one large area of the body should be treated in a hospital.

This medication should not be used in premature infants or newborns until 1 month of age, unless your doctor has told you otherwise. It can cause liver problems in these children.

To use:

Before applying this medication, wash the affected area, remove dead or burned skin.
Use a sterile glove to apply the medicine. Apply a thin layer of silver sulfadiazine to the affected area. Keep affected areas covered with medication at all times.

After this medicine is applied, cover the areas treated with a bandage or leave them uncovered, as you wish.

To help heal your skin or burn infection completely, you should continue to apply this medication throughout the time of treatment. You should continue to use the medicine until the burned area is healed or ready for skin grafting. Do not miss any applications.
If you miss a dose of this medicine, you should apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule.
